Alabama schools are leading the movement to reconnect education lawmakers with today’s classroom experience. The simple, yet significant gesture has far-reaching benefits for students, teachers and the school system, as lawmakers see today’s classroom experience with a fresh pair of eyes – after they most likely haven’t stepped foot in a classroom for years.
Today’s experience is much different for students in middle and high school compared to even ten years ago, thus it is crucial for those who must address at least 50 education-related bills this year to make informed decisions.
Jennifer Brown, Alabama’s Teacher of the Year, started the movement after being inspired by Arizona’s Teacher of the Year, to invite legislators into classrooms. The movement lends an opportunity for lawmakers to hear directly from the students and teachers about the biggest challenges they face and places them in a better position to do their job effectively.
