In Face of Climate Change, Conservation Requires Social Approach

A recently published Stanford-led study on the health of the yellow cedar found that traditional conservation efforts are insufficient for today’s environmental challenges in the face of climate change. The effects of climate change have a global reach and vary depending on regional environments. New approaches to environmental management must reflect this reality by not only considering local laws, policies, and regulations, but also local peoples’ knowledge and perception of the impact of climate change. As the Stanford provostial professor Eric Lambin emphasizes, collecting this type of knowledge requires an interdisciplinary approach that moves beyond a strictly scientific or governmental lens.
