A new rule that is set to take effect in the new year in California could help inmates who were convicted of murder have a chance at loosening their sentences.
Essentially the new rule would not allow for a person to be sentenced for first or second degree murder if they were involved in a crime where they did not directly murder a person or intend to, such as in a robbery, reports KQED.
The felony murder rule will allow for inmates who have previously been convicted under the clause to petition for re-sentencing. KQED estimates that more than 800 inmates could be applying for re-sentencing in the upcoming year.
