BankWorks, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit, is preparing to launch a free training program in Chicago to equip low-income youth with the necessary hard and soft skills for bank jobs in telling, personal banking, and customer service. The programs are partly funded by U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America, which profit from the program by tapping into local talent for their regional banks. The program participants benefit from their access to free classes as well as mentors and tutors that help them refine specific banking skills. BankWorks currently serves communities in Seattle, San Francisco, Phoenix and Portland, but plans to expand with the help of funding from U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America, as well as a $1 million pledge from the Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation.
