New data shows that public universities are seeking to recruit students from out-of-state more aggressively than ever before.
According to data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, at least 240 public universities across the U.S. have decreased the number of in-state students that they’re admitting, with more efforts concentrated on drawing in out-of-state and international students.
Though some local in-state families are arguing that it poses serious challenges for tax-paying families who can’t get into their own schools, others believe that the efforts will help to improve diversity, which is a huge measure of success for universities.
Though out-of-state fees might have been a motive for some universities to collect more money, USA Today reports that universities have been offering more scholarships to lure in out-of-state students, and ultimately expand their geographic diversity among students.
