According to the Boston Globe, during the holidays, despite their clear calls for specific items, nonprofits often receive indiscriminately large amounts of
donations that take up resources in time for sorting and space for storage. Some of these items are helpful, others are merely a burden.
Many nonprofits have procedures in place for how to handle the useless donations they receive. Dress for Success, which only keeps about 25% of all donated apparel, gives excess clothing to the Salvation Army or Goodwill Industries. Even so, the items these last-resort companies cannot handle then end up in landfills.
The lesson for donors? Be discriminate with your donations; they have the potential to hurt an organization more than they help it.
