Three prison inmates from the Eastern New York Correctional Facility recently bested the Harvard debate team, defending the policy, “Public schools in the United States should have the ability to deny enrollment to undocumented students.” The inmates represented the Bard Initiative, a Bard College program that offers tuition-free Bard degree programs to qualified inmates. The team’s success reinforces the power of education in the justice system; many graduates of the Bard Initiative have gone on to be leaders in social justice and other fields- two even entered PhD programs at NYU and Yale.
