A new report found that every day at least 8 children in the U.S. are victims to “family fire” shootings, where a child accesses an unlocked firearm and accidentally makes it go off, injuring or killing someone in the home or area.

A new campaign called the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is hoping to raise awareness on the dangers of having unlocked firearms in the home and the importance of securing firearms to keep them away from children.

“We can all agree, eight children being unintentionally shot and injured or killed every day is simply unconscionable,” said Brady co-president Kris Brown.

A Washington Post analysis found that at least in 80 percent of shooting at U.S. schools, the shooters had taken the guns from their family or friend’s homes.

Campaign leaders say they hope that the campaign will help start intellectual and understanding conversations surrounding the topic.
