Biases Impacting Students in Online Courses

Despite academics who claim that online courses allow students to be judged on their intellect rather than their race or gender, a recent study found that biases are infiltrating classes.

According to the Center for Education Policy Analysis at Stanford University, professors are 94 percent more likely to answer a forum post if it was created by a white male student.

On the other hand, instructors responded to 7 percent of comments posted by women and students of other ethnicities.

The study also found that female, Indian, and white students were more likely to respond to questions posted by others in their gender or racial group.

“Our results show compelling experimental evidence that instructor discrimination exists in discussion forums of online classrooms,” said the paper’s authors.
