In response to China’s request, Apple has removed the New York Times app – in both English and Chinese – from China’s app store, as a result of what Chinese government called a “violation of local regulations.”
Although no specific violations were outlined, it is likely that the Chinese government is acting under recently established regulations that maintain the government’s right to remove or censor apps that “disrupt” social order. China’s strict censorship laws have previously blocked efforts from major apps to deliver news and media to those in China.
