A classic novel is being re-examined for its themes that correspond to the current Me Too movement.
Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita” centers on a male professor who preys upon a 12-year old girl and has been adapted into various movie, theatre, and ballet productions since its publication in 1955.
While the novel itself is a work of fiction, Nabokov is thought to be influenced by the case of Sally Horner, an 11-year-old girl who was kidnapped and raped by a 50-year-old in 1948.
The case, which has been largely ignored by historians and criminal justice experts alike, has resurfaced as part of the Me Too movement.
Nabokov’s work, which is considered among the best novels of the 20th century, has now been praised for highlighting the experiences of many who have faced sexual abuse and harassment.
