Leaders from conservation nonprofits are criticizing a draft bill released Wednesday by Utah Congressmen Rob Bishop and Jason Chaffetz, which aims to “rewrite the rules covering 18 million acres of federal public land in seven countries in eastern Utah,” writes the Public News Service.
Aaron Weiss, the media director of the Center for Western Priorities, slammed the fledgling “Utah Public Lands Initiative” for its “loopholes” that would make the land vulnerable to development.
The president of Conservatives for Responsible Citizenship David Jenkins worries that the bill, if successful, could become a national model for other states where lawmakers and interest groups are working to shift control of federal public lands to the states.
