Giraffe Population is Listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on Red List

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature released new information that there has been a significant decline in the population of giraffes in Africa over the last thirty years, indicating the animal’s possible “silent extinction.”

There has been about a 40% decline in the number of giraffes since 1985, now down to 97,000, moving the animal to the “vulnerable” category.

Released last week, the report outlined human intervention as one of the primary factors driving the decline in their numbers, through poaching and habitat loss. At least 3 of the subcategories of giraffes are increasing in population, however.
