According to a new analysis by the State Department and the Institute for International Education, the percentage of international students who enrolled in U.S. colleges dropped by 6 percent in 2017.
The report entitled Open Doors 2018 notes that in 2016, more than 290,000 foreign students enrolled in U.S. colleges, while less than 272,000 did so in 2017. The report also notes however that there were more international students in the country now than in the previous year since more students participated in alternative programs that allow them to remain in the U.S. after college.
Most of the international students in U.S. schools are from China and India, and the number of students from Saudi Arabia declined by 15.5 percent — the most out of any other country. The report found that California is the state with the highest number of international students altogether.
