Foods that are served in prisons are not only subpar, but also causing many inmates across the U.S. to face illness. In fact, prisoners are six times more likely to get a foodborne illness than the general population, as reported by The Atlantic.
It is not uncommon for inmates to receive food that is expired or rotting either, according to reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and it poses major health threats to the thousands of inmates in U.S. prisons.
While the recent report on the low quality of the food provided in prisons across the country doesn’t necessarily pinpoint a particular cause, it raises questions about the operational soundness of correctional facilities in developing and upholding food safety standards to protect the health of inmates.
