Europe has finished building its first underwater museum, Museo Atlantico, just off the coast of Spanish island Lanzarote, complete with over 300 sculptures from artist Jason deCaires.
Museum visitors must dive anywhere from 12 to 15 meters at Las Coloradas bay to enjoy the underwater sculpture gardens, which are made from concrete materials that serve as artificial coral for the local sea life.
The sculptures depict humans engaging in every day life activity – walking, reading, or even taking a photo. Modeled after similar previous exhibits he’s created, deCaires said the artworks are meant to raise awareness of the challenges that our oceans face.
