University of Maryland’s Institute of Arts Management published a national study suggesting that donors can make the most impact by supporting a smaller number of the most successful nonprofits- a finding that spells bad news for the already struggling African American and Latino arts nonprofits. These organizations produce important work for racial and cultural diversity in the arts, but they are also beleaguered with systemic financial difficulties that repel potential funders. The LA Times calls the study a “wake-up call” to arts donors committed to diversity and inclusion. It also notes that black- or Latino-themed performances or exhibitions put on by mainstream organizations divert recognition, talent, and overall resources from smaller nonprofits solely dedicated to black and Latino arts.
