New Program Helps Retirees Make Meaningful Second Careers

If you’re hip to the nonprofit world, you probably know about Boston’s Daily Table, the nonprofit market established by former president of Trader Joe’s, Dough Rauch. What you might not know is that he developed this social impact project after participating in Harvard University’s Advanced Leadership Initiative.

This year-long program helps retired executives and professionals move into the not-for-profit world. During their time, participants audit courses at the university, brainstorm with professors and other students, make contacts, and develop projects (one of which was Daily Table).

Following Harvard’s lead, Stanford recently began The Stanford Distinguished Careers Institute, which is now in its second year. Although it helps retired professionals chart a new path, the Stanford program does not specifically focus on the nonprofit sector. Instead it helps participants chart “a meaningful second act.”
