New legislation introduced in New York could prevent further routine deportations of undocumented immigrants that often come from traffic violations for not having a license. The new legislation would allow them to obtain a license.
According to Pew Research, 17 percent of charges against undocumented immigrants by Immigration and Customs Enforcement were charges for not having a driver’s license.
It wasn’t until 2001 that undocumented immigrants in New York were no longer able to obtain licenses because they were blocked under the premise that it posed a threat to national security. Everyone is currently required to show proof of residency or a social security number in order to obtain the ID.
The legislation comes as human rights activists maintain that undocumented immigrants are being charged for not having licenses, and these violations are being used against them to immediately deport them.
Critics of the legislation, however, argue that the move would encourage fraud.
