Nonprofit Donations Extend Throughout Country Since Election

Since Donald Trump’s electoral win, donors and activists have been raising money and volunteering for causes they feel are being threatened by the new presidency.

Programs such as Planned Parenthood, Meals on Wheels, and the ACLU received millions of donations within days after the election, which are examples of what Blackbaud’s Stephen McLaughlin called “an evolution of how episodic giving has changed over time.”

The largest increase in donations went to human service organizations and population groups that are at high risk of policy changes and cuts in federal funds, including in funding for children, single mothers, and immigrants.

Although it is too soon to tell how long mass giving will last, McLaughlin says that “today’s headlines and tweets are causing supporters to respond in record numbers for a variety of different nonprofit organizations.”
