In response to anxieties about Oakland’s diminishing Black arts culture, the City Council President Lynette Gibson-McElhaney has developed a resolution to create a Black arts district on 14th Street and neighboring blocks west of Lake Merritt.
This are is already home to the city’s African American Museum and Library, the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, the Joyce Gordon Gallery, the Oakland Post, Geoffrey’s Inner Circle, and the Betti Ono Gallery- the owner of which collaborated with Gibson-McElhaney to draft the resolution.
The Community Economic Development Committee voted on the resolution yesterday, but the results are not yet available. If passed, the city will be able to apply for state and foundation funding to support the new district’s organizations.
