A new study released by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation found that, “In three decades, the world’s oceans will contain more discarded plastic than fish when measured by weight,” reports Discovery News.
The alarming discovery highlights the urgency of the need to cut down on plastic products and create a “circular economy” that produces no waste. The majority of plastic products are used only once before being thrown away, after which they end up in oceans and landfills where they degrade slowly and damage ecosystems.
In 2009, Americans produced 30 million tons of plastic products, says research by nonprofit Keep America Beautiful; only 2 million of those tons were reclaimed.
