A new Ohio bill was signed earlier this month mandating that all students learn how to write in cursive by fifth grade. This comes amid the removal of cursive from curriculum across many states education plans.
Now the Ohio Department of Education must put together curriculum to ensure that their students are once again learning how to write in cursive. Previously many in the education sector believed that the practice was becoming outdated in the digital era, but the bill looks to ensure that students can write formally.
“The instructional materials shall be designed to enable students to print letters and words legibly by grade three and create readable documents using legible cursive handwriting by the end of grade five,” legislators wrote in the bill.
The changes are supposed to be implemented by early next year, no later than July, reports US News.
