According to new research published by the American Psychological Association, a link has been discovered connecting premature death to loneliness.
Gathering data from over 150 different studies, the report indicates that individuals without social bonds have a 50% greater risk of dying early compared to those who maintain strong relationships.
In particular, isolation and living alone had a direct impact on loneliness and dramatically increases an individual’s chance of dying prematurely.
The findings echo a new US trend in which a quarter of Americans live alone as marriage rates decline across age groups.
“There is robust evidence that social isolation and loneliness significantly increase risk for premature mortality, and the magnitude of the risk exceeds that of many leading health indicators,” said professor of psychology Julianne Holt-Lunstad of the study.
