New research suggests that intensive farming methods that have been traditionally used over the years might yield the best results for both the environment and to help feed Americans.
Agricultural practices that are supposed to be more ecofriendly “may actually have greater environmental costs per unit of food,” reports a new study from the University of Cambridge.
The study suggests that eco-friendly agricultural practices might actually be using more land and transforming more wildlife land into farming land, while traditional intensive farming methods focus on one lot of land.
“Habitats are continuing to be cleared to make way for farmland, leaving ever less space for wildlife,” said lead author of the study at Cambridge University.
The study looked into food production sectors including paddy rice, wheat, beef and dairy. Researchers included members of teams from around the globe, Poland, Mexico, Australia and Colombia.
Researchers concluded that eco-friendly methods of farming use more land and ultimately might result in a higher environmental impact.
