New research conducted by political scientists at the University of Washington indicates that poverty has increased within US suburbs.
According to the study, about 17 million people are living in poverty in the suburbs of metropolitan and urban cities.
While many have indicated the rise of suburban poverty is due to its constant expansion, the labor market within suburbs has been shown to contribute to this increase.
After families moved from cities between the 1970s and the 1990s, many faced unemployment in suburbs, especially during the recent recession.
Many anti-poverty programs have been formatted to serve the needs of individuals in urban areas, thus alienating underfunded organizations in suburban areas.
