A recent report from the United Nations Committee is calling a global crisis on the growing resistance to antimicrobial drugs, which has made treating certain diseases more difficult and more risky.
According to the report, drug resistant diseases led to more than 700,000 additional deaths around the world, and researchers estimate that another 10 million will die every year from drug resistance by 2030.
One cause that researchers identified is the misuse and overuse of antimicrobial agents which leads to widespread resistance. Furthemore, drug-resistant pathogens are spread quickly through inadequate sanitation in water, food and waste management, among other things.
The report also highlights the interconnectivity of humans, animals and plants in that they can spread disease from one to the next.
