MacArthur Foundation Launches Nonprofit Initiative for Digital Education

The MacArthur Foundation will soon pour $25 million into the nonprofit, ‘Collective Shift,’ to promote innovative digital learning for students nationwide, particularly disadvantaged youth. The new entity, headed by CEO Connie Yowell, former director of education at the MacArthur Foundation, and COO Jessica Lindl, former head of a nonprofit, will expand upon the work of of the ‘connected cities’ initiative that found success in creating ecosystems of learning between businesses, libraries, museums, and other community institutions. Collective Shift’s first project, ‘LRNG,’ will operate on the principle that youths’ interests should motivate their learning online and outside of the classroom and focus on real-world application.
