Massachusetts Nonprofit Launches “Soft Skill” Work Program for Autistic Young Adults

The Friendship Network for Children, a Massachusetts nonprofit that supports individuals with autism, has launched a program that teaches “soft skills” to autistic young adults entering the workforce. The nonprofit’s founder, Nancy Swanberg, started the program after learning that 60% to 70% of people on the autism spectrum are unemployed, not because they lack job skills, but because they cannot easily intuit and apply job-related social skills in a work environment. A trial class demonstrated the program’s efficacy in promoting workplace success, confirming Swanberg’s certainty in the benefits of the initiative.
