In response to Donald Trump’s attacks on the media during his first few weeks as President, a number of press freedom organizations have decided to unite and create a site that tracks incidents of first amendment violations. The organizations involved in this coalition include the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Freedom of the Press Foundation, and the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University.
This idea was conceived at a meeting, where these press freedom organizations discussed the lack of a database that records press freedom violations. Such violations include, but are not limited to, arrests of journalists and equipment confiscations.
The site is expected to launch in the next couple of months. Trevor Timm, the executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, explains that because freedom of the press is one of our country’s core foundations, “crackdowns” on the media should be “broadcast loudly to the American public so they know what’s going on.”
