Unemployment Benefit Claims Surge by 13,000

Americans who claimed unemployment benefits rose to a five-week high in late May.

The 13,000 rise in unemployment claims during the last week of May suggest the Memorial Day holiday prompted the surge.

The number of claims reflects the individuals who apply for unemployment benefits as a result of losing their jobs.

On the other hand, continuing claims, which includes individuals who already receive government checks, fell by 9,000.

As a result of a 185,000 job increase nationwide in May, the unemployment rate will continue to hover near 4.4%.
